A recent ABC report chronicles a coroner's jury in suburban Chicago found the Vista Medical Center Emergency Room guilty of homicide. This is a continuing wake up call for EDs around the country. A forty-nine-year old woman presented to the ED complaining of shortness of breath, nausea, and chest pains. After seeing the triage nurse, she was told to wait because the ED was overcrowded. Two hours later when staff called her name, she was found dead in the waiting room. The hospital and staff are now open to criminal prosecution. |
